The methods of assessment is one of the most important things in gauging students achievement. This includes the different forms and types of assessment and the usage of tools would depend on the needs of student. From this subject it really requires teachers constant practice and a lot of research. When I started working as a teacher in the academe, I was very excited of facing who will my students and what approach should be. I was determined to share my knowledge and expertise so that my students will become more competent. And one of the most exciting part is by giving them test and knowing how many of the class understand my lesson. It has come to my realization that assessment is not just simply giving exams or test to students but an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding. This inspires me and made me think that if we are teaching what we thought we are teaching.
In today’s era, based on my observation, students should know not only the basic skills, but of course the skills they need that will help them become competent and that would help shape the society that is constantly changing. As teachers we have to let them learn to think critically, do analisation. The changes in the skills and knowledge of our students needs new learning goals, these new learning from the students change the relationship between assessment and instruction. As teachers and future teachers we need to have an active role in making decisions about the purpose of assessment and the content that is being assessed.
I also learned from this course that students learn effectively when they are the ones trying to discover the answer on the problems given. They also learn if they are challenged and given support where in they have this sense of control. Another important thing is collaboration with others to cope up with the problems. Parents must also be aware of how students are being assessed as this provides information about their child’s progress and what they believe to be a greater positive impact on instruction. The use of assessment find it more valuable for evaluation use.
We have to remember that current knowledge implies that what a students actually knows is constantly changing and that we can make better decisions about students achievement through comparisons over a period of time. This assessment affect so many aspects such as grades, instructional needs and curriculum. As a future teacher we need to learn how to set standards, focus on goals, learn how to identify the programs strengths and weaknesses and help plan and improve programs.
